Ending taxpayer subsidies for illegal immigrants, abolishing abortion, hail lawsuit reform:
Austin Republicans call for change at Capitol, City Hall via new resolutions

AUSTIN -- The Travis County Republican Party may be busy putting the finishing touches on Friday night's Reagan Gala, but that doesn't mean they're not paying attention to the Legislative session and City Hall.

The Travis GOP Executive Committee approved three resolutions at its March meeting. The resolutions include:

* Hail litigation reform -- calling on the Texas Legislature to support House Bill 1774 and Senate Bill 10 as a means of curtailing unnecessary and expensive lawsuits following storm damage.

* Taxpayer subsidizing of illegal immigration -- demanding the City of Austin repeal a section of city code that qualifies illegal immigrants for the assistance of city programs.

* Abolishing abortion -- supporting House Bill 948 which would abolish all abortion in the state of Texas.

The text of each resolution is included below this release.

The Travis County GOP works to elect more Republicans and is the official presence of the Republican Party for the greater Austin metropolitan area in Travis County.

WHEREAS, Texas is the best state in the nation to do business because we have prioritized economic growth and job creation; and

WHEREAS, common-sense solutions to lawsuit abuse help keep our economy competitive while also protecting all citizens; and

WHEREAS, Texans already face some of the highest property insurance rates in the nation because of our severe weather; and

WHEREAS, there has been an explosion in Texas courts of unnecessary and economically costly hail-related litigation against insurance companies; and

WHEREAS, all Texans will see higher premiums and deductibles, reduced or lost coverage, or a lack of affordable insurance options as insurance companies must account for the costs of dealing with the hailstorm lawsuit explosion; and

WHEREAS, having numerous companies writing property insurance policies means increased options and greater affordability for all consumers; and

WHEREAS, every dollar that is paid in higher insurance premiums is one less dollar a Texas employer has to hire new employees or to invest in their business, or that a Texan has to support his/her family;

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Travis County Republican Party (TCRP) supports passage by the Texas Legislature of HB 1774 / SB 10 that will end abusive and unnecessary lawsuits following weather-related events. The TCRP believes all lawsuit abuse hurts Texas families and the economy. This form of lawsuit abuse already has created negative disruptions in the property insurance markets in Texas by discouraging timely and reasonable demands and settlements. The TCRP strongly urges members of the Texas Legislature to support legislation aimed at stopping hail-related, lawyer-driven lawsuit abuse in Texas.

WHEREAS House Bill 948 has been filed for the Texas 85th legislative session by State Representative Tony Tinderholt of House District 94 to answer the call of the delegates of the Republican Party of Texas. (
