Atty. Gen. Abbott to receive Travis GOP's Reagan legacy award, give keynote speech
AUSTIN, Texas -- The Travis County Republican Party (TCRP) will honor a favorite statewide elected official at their annual fund raiser on Tuesday.
Atty. Gen. Greg Abbott is the keynote speaker and honoree of the local party's first Ronald Reagan Gala, set for 7 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 24, at the University of Texas AT&T Executive Conference Center, 1900 University Ave., Austin. Individual tickets are $75 a head.
Abbott is slated to give the keynote after receiving the first "Reagan Courage Award." The new award is intended to recognize conservative officials who carry on the legacy of government accountability, limited spending, and family values exemplified by former U.S. President Ronald Reagan.
"I'm really looking forward to joining the Travis County Republican Party to celebrate the conservative legacy of President Ronald Reagan," Abbott said, "and to thank them for joining in our fight against the job killing regulations and mandates from Washington D.C."
The timing of the award could not have been better, according to Andy Hogue, TCRP's communications director.
"Abbott is leading the fight in the Supreme Court to defend Texas' right to draw its own district lines," Hogue said, "so we couldn't think of a better time to cheer on our state's Attorney General for his efforts."
TCRP Vice Chairman Roger Borgelt is the emcee for the event, to be joined by local radio show host Craig Bushon of KJCE-AM, 1370. Joining them in honoring Abbott will be TCRP Chairman Rosemary Edwards, Former State Solicitor Ted Cruz, and Third Court of Appeals Judge Jeff Rose. Cruz and Rose are expected to offer tributes to Abbott.
Pianist and composer Reuel Meditz is scheduled to provide musical entertainment for the Gala, as well as an accompanying silent auction which begins at 6 p.m. and continues through 7:35 p.m. Reuel will debut a custom-made piano built just prior to the Gala, and wear a jacket originally worn by legendary Pop singer Michael Jackson.
The party's Precinct Chairman of the Year will also be named during the Gala.
To date, 12 candidates have filed with TCRP to run on the local GOP primary ballot. TCRP's primary goals are to field qualified, capable candidates for open races in Travis County, coordinate successful campaigns for those local candidates, and effectively train an ever-expanding network of precinct leaders, election workers, and volunteers in this, the fastest-growing county in Texas. A list of candidates, as well as more on the Gala, can be found on TCRP's Web site at http://www.travisgop.com.
