AUSTIN, Texas — The Travis County Republican Party (TCRP) announced today that Joseph Walter has departed as Executive Director, Treasurer and Primary Administrator on January 2 after 16 months of committed work at TCRP to accept an opportunity to return to public service in state government. Leland Bickers, a former policy advisor to Austin Council Member Mackenzie Kelly, has been appointed Executive Director, Treasurer, and Primary Administrator, effective January 3, 2024.

“On behalf of our executive committee, TCRP wishes to thank Joseph for 16 months of committed service, especially as he started a family and welcomed a newborn to the world with his wife Ashley,” said TCRP chairman Matt Mackowiak. “Joseph was tireless in supporting our party, working with our precinct chairs, committees, candidates, elected officials, the state party and our volunteers. We are excited about his return to government and wish him well in his future endeavors. TCRP is grateful for his good work. He will be missed.”

"I'd like to extend my deepest gratitude for the invaluable experience working for and with the Travis County Republican Party,” said Walter. “My time working alongside dedicated Precinct Chairs, Republican officials, candidates, generous donors, and our dedicated Chairman contributed greatly to my professional growth. I know that Leland Bickers' dedication will lead to a seamless transition, and I am thankful for the opportunity to have been part of such a dynamic organization. I wish TCRP continued success and prosperity."

Bickers comes to TCRP from his most recent post serving as Policy Advisor to Mackenzie Kelly, the lone conservative on the Austin City Council. In that capacity, he conducted policy research, analyzed the weekly council meeting agenda items, drafted proclamations and presentations, and held meetings with city department leadership and stakeholders. He previously worked at Accenture where he was a Procurement Operations Analyst and in event planning for Hilton Austin. He is a native of Indianapolis, IN and has lived in Austin since 2015.

“I have known Leland for more than four years and my experience with him in a variety of roles has been that he is dedicated, professional, intelligent and easy to work with,” said Chairman Mackowiak. “I am confident he will hit the ground running and work well with our team to help us achieve our goals for 2024 and beyond. We are excited that he is joining TCRP at this critical time.”

"I am honored and excited to announce that I have accepted the role of Executive Director for the Travis County Republican Party,” said Bickers. “It is with great enthusiasm that I take on this responsibility to serve our community and work towards advancing the principles and values that define our party. As we navigate the challenges and opportunities ahead, I am committed to fostering unity, collaboration, and effective communication within our party. Together, we will strive to build a stronger Republican presence in Travis County. I am eager to work with everyone to amplify our voice and make a positive impact in our community. I am grateful for the trust and confidence placed in me by Chairman Mackowiak, and I am dedicated to upholding the ideals that make the Republican Party a force for good. With a focus on outreach, engagement, and strategic planning, we will strengthen our party's foundation and engage with voters across Travis County to promote conservative principles. I look forward to the opportunity to work alongside all of you in advancing our shared vision for a better future. Together, we will build a stronger Republican Party in Travis County. Thank you for your support, and let's get to work!”
